I am disappointed with Apple’s response to iphone 4.0 issues
I have drunk the APPLE coolaid big time.
I have an iPhone, laptop, external screen and much software; plus i have encouraged numerous friends to buy apple equipment.
But, I am extremely disappointed with their response to the current iPhone 4 antenna issue.
They act like they can put out a product, with its main feature, phone calls less than advertised.
They do continue to push the envelope of design and features, and sometimes when you are that ahead of the game, not all features are going to work every time.
But, if you are going to mass market a product and claim its magic, you better get it right; and if you don't, you better admit to it and take care of it.
I have found apple's customer service excellent, so this is a puzzler.
One of the big differences in owning apple equipment is that they have retail stores to bring in faulty equipment and get it fixed or replaced quickly.
Everyone else, you send it to them for repair.
But, this arrogant attitude is weak.
Comon Steve, come out and admit you made a mistake!!
George, RIP
George Steinbrenner, Yankees’ Owner, Dies at 80.
I had hoped I would never see this headline in the New York Times.
Although growing up in Boston, my brother and I sat in front of a black and white tv the 1950's and became New York Yankee fans; My father grew up a rabid baseball fan, but rejected suffering through bad Red Sox teams and became a Yankee fan.
So as we gazed at Yankee Stadium through this tv, whose screen was no bigger than a netbook, my father narrated stories of Mantle, Berra, Maris, Ford, Lopez, Howard et al. Like the modern Day Super Teams, the Yankees of 1950's-early 60"s were stacked and won;
We loved it; As fans nothing is greater than winning; and better than winning is winning alot;
So, as a young fan from 7 years, we were winning all the time;
And then 1964 came; The Beatles came to New York; Started hearing groups like the Rolling Stones, the Kinks on the radio.
It was also the last year the Yankees won the World Series for 13 years; Yes, the Yankee drought was on;
So, as a 13 year old, I had to wait another 13 years, until the fall of 1977, when Reggie, Goose, Munson et al brought the Yankees back and ruled Baseball.
George Steinbrenner bought the Yankees in 1973. From the first day he demanded not only winning, but championships. And if not, public humiliation and the wims of a dictator; and on top of that illegal activities.
So he was a benevolant dictator, like the demanding father, who threatens you with beheading and then kisses you when you succeed.
He was a fan's dream; Spend as much as possible, fire at will if you think it will help the team and respect the traditions of what is one of the world's greatest sports teams.
He surrounded himself with brilliant, but fragile people like Billy Martin and then manipulated them over and over again; he knew people and certainly pulled the puppet strings to his advantage; but he was an enabler when it came to people.
Instead of sending Martin to anger management and rehab, he would manipulate him enough to get what he needed, but throw Billy the person under the bus.
Is that really being a father? or a friend? no, it is taking and not really giving.
But, with him on the job, the ultimate yankee fan, I could sleep at night knowing he was looking under rocks to make them better.
He and the Yankees won big throughout his rein, with some Drought where he was suspended from baseball and decided to make baseball decisions himself; He finally let baseball people control things in the early 90's and starting in 1996 the Yankees went on another Championship spree, winning 3 in a row.
Besides my own selfish feelings, I am happy the Yankees won last year 2010, in the new Yankee Stadium that George built.
I am lucky to have had one owner of my favorite sports team throughout my adult life.
So at 59, I want to thank George for all the memories. I could not have had a better Father-Owner than you.
George, RIP.
Paul McCartney played SF’s ATT Park on saturday night
Paul McCartney of Beatles fame played ATT Park on saturday night and Deborah and 2 women friends went to the show.
Although John was my favorite Beatle, I did respect paul, john and ringo.
With only Paul and Ringo left, they are Royalty and remind us of an earlier time, as rock was just starting out.
While John brought the artistic fire to the band, Paul brought the romance. His voice, his ballads like yesterday helped define the beatles sound.
While Winston and I stayed at home, Deborah, viewed before the concert at right, went and for her troubles got beer spilled on her and then froze outside on a typical foggy SF night.
Can't say I would be thrilled to be there, but glad that Paul is still out there at almost 70.
I remember my parents commenting that the beatles won't last.
They did.
Spain wins world cup 2010
Spain beat the Netherlands on Sunday 1-0 to win the world cup.
The Netherlands decided that the only way to win was to play rough; They had their wish as 14 yellow cards, with one Dutch getting 2, leading to a Red Card and the team playing with 10 men.
Soon after Spain scored.
Wait until 2014 in Brazil for the next World Cup.
Right, Deborah wins $5 from me as she had Spain.
Chris Henry, NFL Player had brain damage
Chris Henry, an NFL player who was suspended many times for mostly risky behavior, and then died being thrown from
the back of his girl friend's pickup truck, was found to have brain damage in findings released today.
Check the NY Times article below:
NY Times article on Chris Henry
He was found to suffer from a brain disease generally associated with depression. People with this type of brain disorder have been found to engage in risky and somewhat irrational behavior.
Most do not know they have brain damage. In fact he is the youngest player to be found with it. But that is only because he died so young.
As happens many times, this brings up the question of what is society's response or responsibility if it is shown that a human engaged in Football have a high probability of brain damage.
Modern Medicine has continually identified behavior (tobacco, alcohol, obesity, AIDS, etc) which is a risk to our health. Generally, we have taken a laisez faire attitude, saying individuals have a right to engage in risky behavior as long as it does not harm others.
But what about organized sports? Boxing, Football? We can always justify inaction with personal rights.
But if it is proved that brain damage is wide spread, even likely, what do we do?

American win in World Cup shows 1-0 can be exciting
We have developed a society that won't embrace a world-wide icon, soccer or football, because the scores are too low;
Never mind that there is end to end action over 2 45 minute halves and never mind that there is continuous action for the 45 minutes; yes, no commercials, no stopping.
The score is too low.
In other words, instead of going with the flow of the game and enjoying how hard it is to score a goal, we want the candy on the regular basis. We don't want any foreplay. We need to get off (score) often to feel it is worthwhile to get into the game.
Sorry for us americans.
TO UPDATE IPHONE 3G, USE RESTORE INSTEAD OF UPDATE
Check this link: http://www.intomobile.com/2010/06/23/updating-to-ios-4-on-your-iphone-3g/
All 3G users use these directions to RESTORE using iTunes to upgrade your iphone to the new iOS 4.0.
Apparently the upgrade path for the 3G is bad; I was hung up for over 1 hour on the backup.
do it this way. it works.
Winston and I are alone for 2 weeks
Deborah and her daughters have left for Venice and Rome Italy. They left Sunday, leaving Winston and I with each other. He is
doing well so far. He goes to school (see right) each day. This helps him to socialize with other dogs.
I pick him up around 3pm and take him back to work, where he is a hit.
See you on the walk.
APPLE: GREAT PHONES, LOUSY UPDATES
One of the reasons to buy an iphone is that apple is continually updating the software, adding new tools and fixing bugs.
Problem is that everytime they introduce a new phone or update the software there is some problem.
Latest is the change from IOS 3.0 to 4.0.
I have an iPhone 3G. First not all the new features work on mine. The iPhone 3GS and iphone 4 have all the bells and whistles, while the 3G get some and the original is an orphan.
OK i can deal with that. But when i went to update it took 1 hour to backup. Checking with others they had the same problem, either could not complete install or if they did it screwed up the phone.
Any comment from Apple?
Not yet?
Common Steve, crack the whip and get these apple people to work this out.
